DESCRIPTION

A voice, a piano, a salon setting in a private home… It could be Schubert circa 1826, but add a percussionist and fresh new sounds and it’s Summer 2026.

The heart of the program is drawn from Pascal Dusapin’s O Mensch! – a song cycle to words by Nietzsche. It’s theatrical in spirit, but in this intimate performance, Mitch Riley and Jack Symonds bring the intense emotions and compelling musical gestures home. These long-time Sydney Chamber Opera collaborators also join forces for the creation of an evocative new work, I keep your burning glances, based on a Michelangelo text, and Mitch has written the lyric for A Vision of Purple by Hatched Composer alumnus Alexander Maltas.

The Berceuse from The Exterminating Angel is no ordinary lullaby – in the words of its dedicatee, it’s lascivious, morbid and very beautiful. Vanessa Lann’s Floating Sky offers balance with a shimmering, meditative sound world. And the program is completed with music that Claire and Jack have long wanted to perform: an austerely delicate excerpt from Harrison Birtwistle’s Axe Manual – a study in rhythm and colour.

Take a front-row seat for this concert of visions, memories and music that speaks to the soul.

What can you expect from an Avant Gardens concert experience?

These social salon concerts take place in the lovely private homes of generous Ensemble Offspring supporters, so we only share the exact address with concert-goers the week of the event in our pre-concert information email. When you arrive you will be warmly welcomed by the Ensemble Offspring team. Throughout the concert you’ll learn more about the music as the musicians and composers share stories and background on the works. After the concert, we invite you to join the musicians, composers and our wonderful hosts for a chat, a glass or two of wine and a selection of delectables.

Ensemble Offspring’s 2026 Europe and UK Tour showcases a bold cross-section of new Australian and international music. The program features world premieres by Felicity Wilcox, Alice Chance and Matthew Whiteside, highlighting the ensemble’s commitment to boundary-pushing contemporary voices. In London, Ensemble Offspring joins forces with string band, Ruthless Jabiru, for a powerful new collaboration, while a Scottish tour with The Night With… expands the reach of new Australian and First Nations chamber music. The tour begins in Amsterdam with the premiere of a major new percussion concerto by Kate Moore, written for Claire Edwardes and performed with Holland's foremost new music ensemble, Het Muziek, affirming the ensemble’s global artistic impact.

DESCRIPTION

This is a program founded on love and affection, with new friends and old. We’ve played music by Kaija Saariaho nearly every season, and this year it’s her vision of a ‘starry sky’ – mining the normally earthbound voice of the double bass for shimmering jewel-like sounds and placing them in the gleaming setting of metallic percussion. Sofia Gubaidulina and Pauline Oliveros are two more international icons but, surprisingly, women who are new to our repertoire. They take us from solo virtuosity to jamming for the whole trio.

Anthony Braxton’s experimental music was a discovery from Ensemble Offspring’s 2025 visit to New York, when Lamorna heard his Composition No.19 for 100 tubas! Equally fascinating is his ‘garden-scaled’ Composition No.152. From closer to home, we’ve commissioned something new from Jack Symonds, and we’re delighted to reprise Jane Stanley’s gorgeous Desert Rose. And Niki herself will perform a movement from her Shimmer Suite – vibrant and sensuous music dedicated to the memory of her mother.

Join us in the Avant Gardens and find beauty in polarities: sound and silence, wood and metal, strict and free, earthy and celestial.

DESCRIPTION

Our biggest and boldest program of the season is also our most subtle and surreal, with music that will overwhelm you with its delicate beauty and luminous sonorities.

Christopher Cerrone’s ethereal quartet, How to Breathe Underwater is followed by Kate Moore holding a mirror to 13th-century Spain with a modern-day cantiga, Rose of Roses. In its unsung tale, the nightingale, pierced by a rose thorn, sings itself to death.

Two large-scale works receive their Australian premieres. English composer Tansy Davies has written Lost Science as an imaginary journey into the Earth’s interior. She evokes ancient spaces that ‘speak to us in moans, groans, echoes and whispers’, summoning visions of the Divine Feminine, from Isis to Joan of Arc. And Kate Moore’s new percussion concerto, written for her long-time friend Claire Edwardes and co-commissioned with Amsterdam’s Het Muziek, builds on her fascination with storms and the sensual experience of being in nature at the mercy of the elements. The result is equal parts edgy, exhilarating, transcendental, terrifying and beautiful.

Join us by the waters of Sydney Harbour as we consult the oracle.

Drawing from the radical imagination of the European avant-garde to the distinctive voices of contemporary Australian composers, this 70 minute program traces a lineage of music technology spanning the pioneering Fairlight Computer from the 70’s to contemporary sampling techniques and the use of Ableton and MAX/MSP sound manipulation and creation.

Jason Noble (bass clarinet), Lamorna Nightingale (flute), Claire Edwardes (marimba) and Véronique Serret (violin) perform alone yet move within each other’s orbits.
DESCRIPTION

We’re celebrating Steve Reich’s 90th birthday this September. But who needs a birthday as an excuse? Steve Reich’s music is our guilty pleasure – we love listening to it and we absolutely adore playing it.

In this program, we’re presenting three of our Reich favourites and special guest Gabi Sultana joins us all the way from Malta. Gabi is the soloist in Piano Counterpoint – a scintillating tour de force. Who needs six pianists when you have one astonishing virtuoso?

Gabi is joined by Ronan Apcar, Claire Edwardes and Niki Johnson in Quartet – glittering music with hints of jazz infiltrating Reich’s trademark rhythmic complexity. And with a piano–percussion quartet to hand, it makes sense to reprise Radio Rewrite, which was such a hit in our all-Reich marathon at City Recital Hall in 2018. Inspired by a meeting with Jonny Greenwood, Reich riffs on two Radiohead songs: Everything in its Right Place and Jigsaw Falling into Place. Will you recognise the originals? ‘The truth is,’ says Reich, ‘sometimes you hear them, sometimes you don’t.’

Don't be late! The performance begins with Metronomes (from RECITAL), featuring Claire Edwardes and special guest Richard Cilli in a striking fusion of music and movement. Richard then joins Gabi Sultana to create a compelling choreographic interpretation of Piano Counterpoint, bringing Steve Reich's iconic score to life through dance.

DESCRIPTION

It all begins with a drumroll and Bryn Harrison’s inspired pairing of trumpet and snare drum. Not what you might expect from a concert ‘at home’ but it’s just the first quirky surprise in a program blossoming with the spirit of renewal.

Hatched Emerging Performer Arkie Moore is an exciting young trumpeter with a vast stylistic range that has taken her from the world of symphony orchestras to jazz and brass bands, and into the thickets of new art music. Taking the lead from her love of jazz, we end the program with the Waveland Suite by Andrew Classen, an avid golfer with a sense of humour who brings fresh meaning to the idea of ‘swing’.

Between these bookends are miniatures written especially for Ensemble Offspring. It will be a joy to revisit Gerard Brophy’s Just outside Van..…, with its sensuous evocations of a mediaeval Kurdish fortress and the remnants of an Armenian monastery. Meanwhile, we look forward to new music by Nardi Simpson, inspired by Yuwaalaraay waterways; Jane Stanley’s recollection of a Sydney street, fragrant with jasmine and gardenias; and our Hatched Emerging Performer Commission for 2026, a new work by Californian jazz saxophonist and Grammy Award winning composer Remy Le Boeuf.

DESCRIPTION

Since 2017, Ngarra-Burria: First Peoples Composers has embodied deep listening and a bright future for Australian art music, nurturing a growing community of First Nations composers. In 2026, we celebrate ten years of cultural continuity, collaboration and creativity through Ngarra-Burria with a deadly Gala Concert at Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Ultimo. Experience the bridges Ngarra-Burria has built over the past 10 years, between forms, genres, stories and generations, with a “best of” collection of First Nations chamber works written especially for and with Ensemble Offspring. Performed with clarity, flair and heart, this music speaks to Country, connection and the evolving future of an Australian sound.
